Summer Art Camp 2012


Position Description: The Frist Center’s Teaching Assistant Program is designed to introduce participants to museum education by providing hands-on teaching experiences in a unique learning environment.  Teaching Assistants will gain a valuable understanding of the summer art camp program within the Education Department.

Summer Art Camp sessions at the Frist Center are designed to encourage artistic expression, art appreciation, understanding and imagination for children ages 5 to 13. Summer  Art Camp Teaching Assistants work to support of Summer Art Camp Instructors, assisting with the implementation of lessons and demonstrating art making techniques, as well as the set up and clean up of materials and supplies. SAC Teaching Assistants will benefit from close interaction with experienced museum educators and art instructors, acquiring firsthand experience teaching art to school aged children. SAC Teaching Assistants will develop their classroom management skills through direct supervision of campers in the pre-camp and after camp program. Through their work at Summer Art Camp, SAC Teaching Assistants will gain better understanding of how children learn within the museum environment, object based learning, and the opportunity to experiment with a variety of art making materials and techniques.

Requirements: To apply for the SAC Teaching Assistant Program, students must be:
• Enrolled at a college or university when applying
• Holding junior, senior, or graduate student status when applying
• Pursuing a degree in art education, education, or studio art

Commitment:  Students must commit to the following four weeks during the summer, June 11–15, June 18–22, July 9–13, and July 16–20. SAC Teaching Assistants must be available to work either mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or afternoons from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. SAC Teaching Assistants must be available for mandatory orientation training on June 7, 2012, as well as Studio cleanup during the week of July 23–27, 2012.  SAC Teaching Assistants are expected to work five days a week either morning or after afternoon shift for the entire duration of Summer Art Camp 2012.

Application Process:  To be considered for a Summer Camp TA position, you must submit a packet containing all of the following.

• A cover letter explaining why you would like to participate in the Teaching Assistant Program at the Frist Center, and how it fits into your long-term career goals.
• A letter of faculty recommendation
• A completed Intern Application Form
