Artists' Perspectives: American Ballads: The Photographs of Marty Stuart
Presented by Marty Stuart and Hilda Stuart
Frist Center Auditorium
Seating is first come, first seated
Although known primarily as a country music star, Marty Stuart has been taking photographs of the people and places surrounding him since he first went on tour with bluegrass performer Lester Flatt at age 13. His inspirations include his mother, Hilda Stuart, whom he watched document their family’s everyday life in Mississippi. Both have a skillful awareness of timing and composition and are able to sensitively tease out something unexpected because of unique relationships with many of their subjects based on years of friendship and trust. In this conversation moderated by Frist Center Curator Katie Delmez, mother and son will offer insight into each other’s practices and motivations.
Following the Artists’ Perspectives, Marty Stuart and Hilda Stuart will be signing copies of the exhibition book, American Ballads: The Photographs of Marty Stuart. The signing will take place from 1:00–2:00 p.m. outside the Auditorium. Please note that the Stuarts will only be signing the exhibition publication, which is available for pre-purchase in the Frist Center Gift Shop.
