In this lecture, artist Jack Spencer discusses his interest in myth, mystery, and the ephemeral nature of existence beyond the surface. A resident of Nashville whose work has been exhibited and collected internationally, Spencer alters the surfaces of his photographs with techniques suggestive of painting to create images with rich tones and colors, softly-focused or veiled forms, and traces of the artist’s hand, as seen in imperfections, marks, and painterly textures.

This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Jack Spencer: Beyond the Surface, on view at the Frist Center July 12 through October 13, 2013.
