The John Bourne collection features 4,400 years of art from the ancient Americas, from Mexico to Bolivia and points in between. This talk explores the meanings and functions of these artworks in ceramic, stone, and precious metal. Touching on key points of social politics, religious ideology, and the artistic process among the indigenous American cultures represented in the collection, Dr. Reents-Budet examines issues of authentication and restoration that challenge the modern museum, with a focus on the conservation research conducted on the pieces by scientists and conservators at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, the collection’s permanent home.
