Learn about WWI Vintage Cameras

Dr. Robert J. Barnett, authority on the photography of World War I and the U.S. Army Signal Corps photographers, will be on hand at the Frist to display vintage cameras.

During WWI, the recording of the massive military effort was the responsibility of U.S. Army Signal Corps photographers. They faced direct hazards from the warfare itself, and many challenges from the use of the large, heavy-but-fragile cameras in the dirt, dust, and mud of the trenches. Despite everything, they managed to record many images of both the technology of the war and the terrible human conditions experienced during the war.

Dr. Barnett, an avid collector, will display several of his WWI-vintage cameras of the types used by the Army photographers during the war.
