Military bands are a proud U.S. tradition dating from colonial times. The first local American military band was recorded in 1653 and was a part of the New Hampshire militia.
Armed services support bands (like The President’s Own band, which performs at the White House during official state occasions) have been an important part of special events, including military funerals, ship commissionings, and change of command and promotion ceremonies.
